Many koi owners often wonder how to tell the sex or gender of koi fish. There are certains ways you can tell the difference between male and female koi. Koi sexing starts through observation. One of the best ways to tell the sex of koi fish is when they are feeding. You will have your best view of your koi at this time.

In order to tell the difference between male and female koi they first need to be old enough.

Here are the differences between male and female koi:

1. Male koi are slender and like a torpedo shape.

2. Female koi fish are usually fatter at the abdomen. When viewed from above you can see they are wider and rounder.

3. Male koi fish have breeding tubercles come breeding time. These are small white spots specifically on the gill plates. Don’t mistake these for ich.

4. The biggest way to tell the difference between male and female koi fish is come breeding time. When koi fish begin to spawn and lay eggs you will see the male chasing or courting the female. If you see a koi bumping the back end or side of a koi it’s a good chance that it’s a male.

Knowing the sex of koi fish is exciting as many pond owners can’t wait until they start to breed. Breeding koi fish is very neat to watch and new baby koi are always a bonus. Next time you look at your pond fish see if you can tell the difference between male and female koi.

When it comes to taking care of koi fish you will need to learn as much about koi in order to keep pond fish healthy and disease free. Koi fish make wonderful pets for outdoor garden ponds but they do require your time and effort in order to be successful at fishkeeping. Its not as simple as filling your pond with water and feeding your koi fish daily. There’s more to koi fish care then that! Your koi pond is like your child that you have to tend to it everyday. Koi pond owners should learn all they can about how to take care of koi fish.

Taking care of koi fishstarts off even before your koi pond is built and before you buy your koi at your local pet store. Proper planning is involved before building your koi pond, such as how deep your koi pond will be, will there be any ledges for pond plants and water lilies and how will you protect your koi fish from predators. Koi fish care starts by learning as much as you can before you jump into a very rewarding hobby.

Koi Fish Pond - Beautiful Water Garden in Backyard

require plenty of space to grow and live. For your koi pond you will need to make sure you provide your new pond fish with a suitable environment, proper filtration and adequate oxygen. If you are going to be succesful in taking care of koi fish you will need to provide a very clean environment for your new fish. In order to do so you will need to have a good pond filter and one that can handle the amount of fish waste being produced. Think of it like your pond filtration is the heart of your koi pond. Once the pond filter fails, everything begins to fall apart and many things can go wrong. You need to have a very good pond pump and pond filter for your water garden for your koi fish to stay healthy.

Koi fish

Learn How To Take Care Of A Koi Fish Pond To Fully Enjoy The Hobby!

Also remember before adding any koi fish to your pond you will need to add beneficial bacteria to your pond to help start get the ecosystem running properly. The beneficial bacteria is what helps keep your koi fish healthy as it breaks down fish waste making it less toxic to koi known as the nitrogen cycle. After doing water changes and adding fresh water to your koi pond you should always replenish the beneficial bacteria by adding some. Taking care of koi fish is rewarding but there are many necessary steps to keep koi healthy.

Tip: Buy Koi Fish From A Reputable Friendly Clean Pet Store Or Koi Breeder

After you’ve decided on your koi pond plans and built your garden pond your going to need to buy some koi fish for your new water garden. Koi care starts right here as you need to know what a healthy koi looks like. When you buy sick or injured koi you are adding nothing but problems to your new pond and may very well infect your already established healthy fish in your pond. It is very important to understand everything you can about koi diseases so you can prevent the introduction of diseases and parasites into your koi pond. Never buy koi fish from an aquarium that has sluggish fish, dead fish or visible signs of illnesses or diseases. Always buy your koi fish from a reputable koi dealer. Remember if the pet store is dirty think of how well the fish tanks are being maintained and how well the koi fish are being cared for. Image is everything and you should buy from a pet store that is clean and have a knowledgeable staff. Before you buy your koi fish ask as many questions you can like what type of fish food are they feeding their koi, how often are they feeding their koi, have the koi been treated lately for any diseases and if so what fish medication have been used? Ask whatever questions you want as they should know the answers to all your koi questions. If not, thank goodness for the Internet as you can find tons of resources all about koi right online.

Hand Feeding Koi Fish By Pond

When it comes to feeding your koi fish in your new pond it depends on the time of year that will determine the type of koi food you will be feeding them. In fall you will feed koi a lighter food that is much easier to digest. During the summer you can feed your koi a fish food with higher protein. You should only feed them what they can eat within five minutes. Any food left over after five minutes can deteriorate your water quality and foul it up. Never leave any uneaten food in your koi pond!

After you know all the facts about koi, taking care of koi fish is not that hard at all. If you have all the proper pond equipment, you should relatively have little to do with pond maintenance. You should however check your pond water at least once a week and top up your koi fish pond with water when needed. In the meantime I hope you all enjoy your new garden pond and taking care of koi fish is a very fun and rewarding hobby to be in.

The Nycon Products Big Top Pond Netting and Cover is one of the greatest seasonal pond maintenance tools you can have for your koi fish pond come fall. This pond netting and cover keeps not only leaves, debris and branches out of your pond but also works well during your whole pond season by keeping pond predators away from your prized koi. As we all know pond predators pose a threat to your koi and Nycon Products Big Top Pond Netting & Cover is the right solution for protecting koi fish.

One of the best features of this koi pond netting is that it comes with stakes and very easy to assemble. What I like is that the stakes keeps the pond net off the top of the water as you see in the picture above of the pond netting. It really works great at keeping leaves and birds out of your fish pond. All you need to do if leaves and debris are on top of your pond net is to lift up one side and shake off the debris. This Nycon Products Big Top Pond Netting & Cover does just the right job!

Pond nets are a great way to protect your koi fish pond from predators. Pond netting comes in many different types and sizes that you can buy. The first thing you need to figure out is the overall dimensions of your pond and that will determine the pond netting size you will need. Not only will it help protect your koi fish from predators like the heron, raccoon and eagle but it will stop leaves from coming in your garden pond come fall. Pond Nets have two great features that will help overall with your koi fish care.

Pond netting helps keep your water quality healthy for your pond fish. With the use of a pond netover your water garden will help reduce waste load on your pond filter and keep koi diseases and parasites from occurring by not giving them an ideal condition to occur and breed. Yes, pond netting may take away from your overall appearance of your pond but the overall safety and your koi fish health is very important. I know I have two eagles nest up the road from me and have frequent heron visits regularly. I have no choice but to use a pond netin order to protect my koi fish. You may have a similar problem with pond predators and you will have no choice but to buy some pond netting.

Here are a few different types of pond nets that you can buy for your fish pond:

1. Nycon Products Big Top Pond Cover Netting

Koi fish predators are everywhere when it comes to koi ponds but how do you keep and protect your koi fish from predators. First off some koi predators are raccoons, snakes, frogs, cats, kingfishers and the worst predator of all the blue heron. All of these predators pose some risk to your koi but what can a pond owner do to protect koi from being eaten.

The first thing to protecting your koi from predators is getting to know the predator themselves. One thing that a racoon is afraid of is deep water as they usually fish in rivers from a log or in shallow water. What a koi owner can do is when planning your pond at the beginning is to make sure you leave steep edges that will help stop or prevent racoons from fishing for your koi and help keep your koi fish safe from predators.

The worst koi fish predator of all is the blue heron. Herons can literally wipe out a whole pond before you even know they were there. These birds look magnificent but to me it’s my worst nightmare being a koi breeder myself. I’ve seen these herons try and come eat my koi on a daily basis multiple times a day. The good thing is that there are certain things koi pond owners can do to help protect their koi fish from predators.

10 Simple Steps To Protecting Koi Fish From Predators

1. Set up pond netting over your garden pond to protect your koi fish.

2. Place koi castles or tunnels in the pond so they can have a place to hide.

3. Set up a scarecrow sprinkler system that’s motion activated that scares those nasty little koi fish predators.

5. Install a floating alligator head or hippo in your pond as this will scare pond predators away.

6. Install koi decoy in pond that will help protect your koi fish and give them a chance.

7. Install a Garden Defence Electronic Owl that will help deter pond predators from coming and eating your koi fish.

Great Blue Heron Decoy - Stops Other Herons From Snacking On Your Koi Fish

8. Install a Heron decoy that will help deter herons from stopping by your koi fish pond. Another way to stop pond predators from eating your pond fish.

Dog Keeps Pond Predators Away - Keeps Koi Fish Safe

9. Get a dog! Your pet would one of the best ways to keep wildlife away from your pond. Hopefully he’ll stay out of it too!

Animal Away Ultrasonic Tone Device - Keeps Koi Ponds, Flower Beds Safe From Animals!

Many pond owners believe that you cannot keep hardy water lilies with koi fish but that’s not the case. Water lilies are a great addition whether you have koi fish, goldfish, shubunkins or any other type of fish. Any type of water lilies go well with koi fish whether its hardy water lilies or tropical. The reason people believe that water lilies cannot be kept with koi is that koi are large fish and they are scavengers. Koi fish tend to uproot plants such as water lilies as they are searching for food but you can still enjoy water lilies in bloom all summer long.

With koi fish ponds what you can do to ensure that your water lilies grow well is let them establish themselves. Let your water lilies grow and have a chance to root themselves well within your water lily basket or container you use. Another good suggestion for you is to place some large stones in an around your planted water lilies. This will help prevent your koi fish from uprooting your water lilies. There are plenty of things a pond owner can do to help protect your water lilies from koi whether its hardy or tropical.

Photo Courtesy of Country Koi Fish Farm at www.WaterPlantsForPonds.com

I’ve been keeping koi fish with my water lilies for over 15 years now. I have some pretty large koi as well and they don’t seem to be a problem with my pond. They did one time uproot a water lily last year but I never placed large stones around my newly added water lily tuber so they dug it up. I’ll upload some more koi pond pictures displaying my hardy water lilies in bloom with my koi fish nearby. Some people even place plastic netting in an around their water lily pots and other water plants so that their koi fish can not get access to them.

Yesterday one of my favourite koi fish died which I was sad to see. This koi was around 10 years old now, which I got from an old guy who didn’t want to have his koi fish pond anymore. I’ve had this koi fish for about 4 years now. I know for the last week or so he wasn’t eating and this koi was acting very lazy. All of my other koi fish were eating fine and the koi were nice and healthy.

This koi could have died from old age as everything was fine water quality and there was no signs of fish diseases as well. I know as a result of my koi not eating he started to slim down and some of the koi fish scales were seen throughout my indoor pond as they have been falling off. This was one of my biggest koi’s which was around 18″ long. I was hoping that this koi would have lived longer but unfortunately died. I knew something was up and I even noticed that the koi fish colouration was fading. His colour faded as you can see in the koi pictures below of my koi.

My koi really slimmed down in his last few days. I’m sad to see this koi die on me but it was an older koi and had a good life while it lasted. This was one of my biggest kois I had, that’s why I was a little attached.
