Yesterday one of my favourite koi fish died which I was sad to see. This koi was around 10 years old now, which I got from an old guy who didn’t want to have his koi fish pond anymore. I’ve had this koi fish for about 4 years now. I know for the last week or so he wasn’t eating and this koi was acting very lazy. All of my other koi fish were eating fine and the koi were nice and healthy.

This koi could have died from old age as everything was fine water quality and there was no signs of fish diseases as well. I know as a result of my koi not eating he started to slim down and some of the koi fish scales were seen throughout my indoor pond as they have been falling off. This was one of my biggest koi’s which was around 18″ long. I was hoping that this koi would have lived longer but unfortunately died. I knew something was up and I even noticed that the koi fish colouration was fading. His colour faded as you can see in the koi pictures below of my koi.

My koi really slimmed down in his last few days. I’m sad to see this koi die on me but it was an older koi and had a good life while it lasted. This was one of my biggest kois I had, that’s why I was a little attached.

Koi fish farms are the best place for people looking at buying high quality koi. Some of the advantages of buying farm raised koi are the wide variety of colours to choose from, size and the expert advice from the people who raise them.

Koi that you purchase from pet stores, the aquariums are always being introduced with mew fish, and stress is the biggest reason that koi and goldfish develop diseases and become ill. With the pet stores purchasing fish all the time leaving them in small conditions, you will have a more likely chance of bringing diseases back to your aquarium or koi fish pond.

When buying koi from fish farms they are grown outdoors in large bodies of water resulting in maximum growth potential unlike the stunted fish you may buy at pet stores. Fish farms are the best way to buy koi as they are well taken care of unlike the new employees at pet stores with little experience.

Buying koi from fish farms are the best way to ensure your koi are healthy and well taken care of by the experts. When deciding on buying and introducing new koi to your aquarium or fish pond you should strongly think of koi fish farms. Try and locate a koi dealer around you, you may very well find better prices there too.

When your purchase koi fish from pet stores or online it is necessary to quarantine your new arrivals. Quarantine helps prevent koi diseases from being passed on to your other fish. When you buy koi online is when it’s extremely important to quarantine them as they have just gone through an incredibly stressful journey to get to you. When koi are kept in crowded and stressful conditions for long periods of time koi diseases and illness are sure to happen. That’s why quarantining fish is extremely important so they don’t pass these diseases on to your other fish.

When you buy koi from the pet stores you should really do this as well. Just imagine not doing this and it infects your other prize fish you may have in your koi fish pond. You may have some prize koi where you could have spent hundreds of dollars or more. It’s just not worth the chance. I know when you look at koi they may look to be healthy but they may not be. Every disease works differently and I will give you an example ich. Ich is a koi disease, common in goldfish as well and tropical fish that you can’t see with your eye until about 2 days later and they appear like small grains of salt on fish. Just because they look healthy is not always the case.

Quarantine your fish to help prevent common parasites like flukes, anchorworms, fish lice and ich. You should quarantine new koi fish for about 2 weeks just to make sure everything is fine. You don’t want to rush this process and throw your koi in your fish pond only to find out later that you’ve infected all your fish. Now you will have to spend money now on koi diseases medication and treatments. Wait the full 14 days and then observe your fish for any signs of illness or scratching. If there okay then you can add these fish to your koi fish pond.

Quarantine care is an important part in keeping your fish healthy. A tip when you quarantine fish is to add aquarium salt to the water, this helps heal koi and reduces stress. Salt is a very effective form of treatment for fish. The moral of this story is quarantine your fish to reduce headaches and save you some money in the long run.
