Many pond owners believe that you cannot keep hardy water lilies with koi fish but that’s not the case. The reason people believe that water lilies cannot be kept with koi is that koi are large fish and they are scavengers. Koi fish tend to uproot plants such as water lilies as they are searching for food but you can still enjoy water lilies in bloom all summer long.

I’ve been keeping koi fish with my water lilies for over 15 years now. I have some pretty large koi as well and they don’t seem to be a problem with my pond. They did one time uproot a water lily last year but I never placed large stones around my newly added water lily tuber so they dug it up.
